John Robert, I don’t know if you remember me. Your Aunt Patty and I have been friends for over forty years and I watched, at a distance, the “Clark Boys” grow up. Pat sent me this article, knowing I would love and appreciate it. I now will subscribe.

I agree, the art of handwritten letters is sadly fading away. Like your sister, I treasure recipes in my mother and father’s handwriting. My aunt who passed away a few years ago at the age of 97, would write me letters in beautiful penmanship. She had to drop out of school in the 8th grade in order to help raise her three younger siblings, but later in life in her seventies, received her GED. She was a letter-writer!

My nine year granddaughter has a pen pal who is in her late eighties, possibly early nineties. She writes the most eloquent, endearing and engaging letters to Grace, encouraging her in her activities and her school work, not to mention adding good moral life lessons that few children hear nowadays. We treasure and look forward to her letters she do lovingly sends. All with beautiful penmanship!

Reading your post brought warm thoughts about a friendship that is bound together by handwritten letters. Thank you.

I look forward to reading more

of your posts.

I am so sorry to hear of your Uncle Ben’s passing. We always really liked him and I know he certainly will be missed.

Sharee - of course I remember you. It's wonderful to hear from you. Thank you for sharing your sentiments in a comment. I love the story of your aunt. She sounds like a special person. I've had a number of friendships that transcend generations - handwritten letters from these mentors are so helpful as we learn and grow.

I feel the love mom has written over the years in recipes, cards, and letters. Her hand written letters would make me homesick when serving in the AF and unable to give her a hug in return, or sharing the letters with my girls when they were your sons age. Each time I look through my cookbook I have a piece of her and all the good she has created with her beautiful penmanship. It is simply wonderful.
