For today’s subscriber-only post, I decided to test the podcast feature in Substack. It works like regular posts in many ways - my content comes right to your email inbox. But instead of the written word, there’s a play button you can press to hear me speak.
Nice, huh?
For this initial podcast, I decided to do a reading of one of my more popular stories: The Rabbit. Please have a listen. Perhaps hearing it in my voice will change the meaning - or reveal something new.
Note: when you press play, it will take you to my Substack page where you will need to be logged in (the same thing that happens when you want to leave a comment or like my stories). If you are reading this, you are a subscriber and do have an account. You can either log in using your password or request an email link.
And if you’re thinking this seems cumbersome, I agree; it’s one of the drawbacks of Substack. I am guessing some of you (many?) have had issues leaving comments and/or clicking “like,” as a result. I do hope you can figure it out and are able to listen to my story. And I will keep trying to make the user experience as painless as possible.
As for podcasting - not sure where this will go. It was fun figuring out how to record and edit this simple first try. And reading one of my stories aloud while trying not to choke, cough, or stutter - harder than I expected.
I have a new respect for those who do regular podcasts, radio, and the like. As with many art forms, there is a lot to address in pulling off a good audio sequence. I kept it basic for this first go-round. But I’ll see if I can spice things up a bit for my next try.
